Artek

- Elena Kholkina
Verlag: selfpublished
Erscheinungsjahr: 2014
"Artek was an international pioneer camp on the black sea in the town of Hurzuf on the Crimean peninsula. It was established in 1925 and flourished in the Soviet times. Going to Artek was a privilege for any child and an experience that no one ever forgets. Friends you find in Artek are forever.

The zine is a reedit of a personal archive of my friend, who went to Artek in 1982. The archive consisted of a diary, a book of songs, postcards, photographs and some scraps. The zine collects the most touching, genuine and amusing memories and plays around with bits and pieces."

Azbuka. The Alphabet of Shared Words

- Jana Romanova
Verlag: selfpublished
Erscheinungsjahr: 2015

In March 2014 the tension between Russia and Ukraine started to grow high, inspired by the informational war on the situation in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. Citizens of both countries started to loose the desire to understand each other. Romanova asked different people who took part in the revolution in Kiev at the Square of Independence, to remember words which are absolutely the same both in Russian and Ukrainian languages and illustrate these words for the photographs — to make a sort of ABC, based on the idea that understanding starts from language, and language starts from alphabet.

Did we ever meet?

- Elena Kholkina
Verlag: selfpublished
Erscheinungsjahr: 2014
"The book is built on two photographic archives – mine (photographs of my friends made between 2011-2013) – and photographer Tatyana Soldatova’s archive (photographs of her friends made in 1980s) that I happened to see by chance and compare with mine. This comparison brought out a large number of identical shots taken during such different epochs in Russia. The project has become a reflection about time, a link between past and present, mirroring and similarity of lives of total strangers. The first dummy was designed during the ISSP 2013 (Latvia), under the direction of Teun van der Heijden."

"The book is self-made and published in a limited edition of copies, has a complex system of pages of different sizes and spreads, on tactile paper. I do everything myself – printing, cutting, folding, glueing, binding."

Distant & Close

- Alla Mirovskaya
Verlag: selfpublished
Erscheinungsjahr: 2015
"This work marks the beginning of my research of the capabilities photography has in regard to showing something not visible to the eye, but existing in reality nonetheless. Take relationships, for instance. Relationships are something ephemeral, it’s not so simple to come, see how they look like and shoot them. Even more so, when it comes to your own family and the relationships within it."

J.B. about men floating in the air

"Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas were two American pilots of Lithuanian origin who attempted to achieve a flight endurance record in 1933. They flew from New York to Kaunas in a small airplane, crossed the Atlantic Ocean, but the plane crashed by the Polish city Myślibórz, and both pilots died, while being only a bit short of their final destination. The causes of this accident are still unknown.

Although the text became a starting point for my reflections, I didn't want my images to simply illustrate it, therefore I invented a parallel world which correlates just indirectly with the poem."

Looking for My Father

- Natalya Reznik
Verlag: selfpublished
Erscheinungsjahr: 2016

"In her albums there was almost no photo left of my father — not only she divorced with him, but also destroyed all the photos of him including those from the wedding day. However, I was able to find a few images from an old black and white passport photo machine. They were together on this shots, however one can not really see his face — images are quite small and he always wears «aviator» glasses. He looked like a young Belmondo. On these images they are kidding together, kissing each other and smile a lot. One of those photos I kept for my self (my mother never liked this and was trying to find out why I want to have his photo for a long time) and since then keep it in my wallet.Really, what for do i need this photo? Sometimes I just want to look at it and imagine that my father, although i never met him, was as beautiful as Belmondo. On some occations I proudly show this photo to friends («My parents in ’70s»). Even if this photo never existed, I should have created it in Photoshop. This project is very personal, somewhere inbetween documentary and fiction, where the dreams of my mother are real, but the memory, I created for myself based on them, is fictional." Midnight Sun

- Alla Mirovskaya
Verlag: selfpublished
Erscheinungsjahr: 2015

"The photos used in this work were shot in Iceland, but could have been created as easily at any place far from my home. I try to recognize the function of memory in a photograph, and I delete parts of the exposures so that they would resemble my memories, which cannot be reproduced by memory in their original form. I choose fragments of photos to delete based on a chance and an impulse, just like most of the photos this project contains. Any other part of the photo could have disappeared. I guess that in this form the images look like an Icelandic landscape illuminated by midnight sun, when most of the things you could see had disappeared from view."

Mistakes

- Pavel Kosenko
Verlag: selfpublished
Erscheinungsjahr: 2015
“This book tells about mistakes. It says that creative work is impossible without experimenting. It focuses on being open to unexpected outcomes and being able to spot new opportunities there. The book conveys how difficult it is to let yourself make mistakes, and how it gets even more difficult with years. It deals with my own wish to be someone who is still not afraid of making mistakes, i.e. experimenting and creating new things.” Pavel Kosenko
